The Union Who Needs It!

	*Proportion of Americans living below the poverty level: 12.7 percent (34.5 million people)*
	*The average poverty threshold for a family of four: $16,660 in annual income*
	*The average poverty threshold for a family of three: $13,003 in annual income*
	*Percentage and number of poor children: 18.9 percent (13.5 million)*
	*Children make up 39 percent of the poor and 26 percent of the total population.*
	*The poverty rate for children is higher than for any other age group.*

These are staggering statistics yet I still hear members ask what good is the Union and what do they do for me? We are all fortunate for what the Union has done and continues to do for us. We recently won arbitration for one of our members awarding him over $85,000.00 in back pay for a wrongful termination, that’s what the Union does and continues to do. We all have good benefits, paid vacations, paid time off, paid overtime, retirement benefits, the list goes on and on, that’s what the Union does and continues to do. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to eliminate all those statistics listed above? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to eliminate corporate greed and put people first instead of the bottom line? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone could get a good paying job and live the American dream? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all Americans had the right to join a Union? All of this is possible if we all pull together for the good of all and not what’s good for me. You are the Union so lets work together and make this all possible. And as always I leave you with this thought.
